Ultrasound-3D/4D
An ultrasound is a type of scan that uses sound waves to visualize the internal structures of the body. A water soluble gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound can pass between the transducer (the probe which is moved over the skin) and the organs underneath. Different organs inside the body reflect the ultrasound more or less depending on their density. The ultrasound machine analyses the reflected sounds (or echoes) and displays them on a monitor for interpreting by the radiologist.
Ultrasound is now a widely used diagnostic tool. Originally only used for imaging of the abdominal organs and pregnancy, it is now used to examine the thyroid, breast, newborn babies and even for guidance of biopsy probes.
Recent advances also include 3D and 4D enabling us to see structures in real time. Doppler studies allow us to see the flow rates of blood throughout the arteries and veins particularly in the neck and legs.
